From Christchurch (eastern side of the South Island), we took a train to Greymouth (western side of the South Island). We read that this is one of the most spectacular train rides in the whole world (according to Frommers/Fodors). Truth be told, we were disappointed; it’s always hard to live up to expectations when you hear the world’s greatest anything. There were some very pretty unspoiled areas – not much in the way of towns or civilization. Those that do live along this route must be hardy, independent folk that don’t mind the isolation from humankind. Surprisingly, not many animals or birds either…I’m sure they couldn’t get visas!
