I really wanted to see some koalas…and we were not disappointed. They mostly sleep and eat. Again they look cute, but we were warned that they aren’t always the friendliest.
We wanted to see a few more animals so we took a trip out to Wildlife World where they have animals in their natural habitat. here are some scary snakes safely ensconced behind some glass.
This is what the General Manager of the hotel told us as we arrived. Even blind and toothless, he looks scary!
We saw lizards crawling around the island and hotel grounds.
At the Cape du Couedic rocks within Flinders Chase National Park we saw the fur seals basking on the rocks. We had a bit of rough seas this day so not many were frolicking in the water. You could smell them before you could see them – not sure I would want to visit them during the summer!
KI is home to a rare breed of Australian sea lions. Here the old males sleep on the beach, the young frolic in the shallow waters and the moms….well, they are the only ones working – they are out getting food for the young ones.
This “adolescent boy” pictured here tried to befriend us. He was crying for his mom (who never came since she was out looking for food.) The conservation folks discouraged any interaction with the animals since they didn’t want the sea lions to grow accustomed to humans (the motto at the park is: ”observation not interaction.”) Once this little guy started to cry, we heard several more young ones start to cry….interesting to note that the dads never stirred.
Kangaroos feed beginning at dusk. Next to our hotel was a large area where hundreds of kangaroos come to dine each night. We walked amongst a hundred or so kangaroos who didn’t mind that we joined them. We didn’t want to get much closer….we heard they are not too friendly and will kick you in the stomach if they feel threatened. We saw a few “boxing” with each other – not something I wanted to experience personally.
